Wedding Superstitions

We are going to run you through some of the good omens and bad omens on your wedding day. If you see any of these things then we strongly advise you to focus on the wedding entertainment regardless because if it’s a slice of good luck – celebrate! If it’s bad, then hey, you’ll want something great to take your mind off it.

Good Omens

  • Seeing a rainbow – If you see a multi-coloured refraction of light in the sky then the good news is you will have good luck throughout your wedding. Having the sunshine – If the sun shines, then you’ll have a good day. Obviously. After all, the sun is shining!

  • Meeting a black cat – We aren’t too sure if just seeing a black cat is enough but from what we’ve read, seeing one on your wedding day is good luck. If you see one on any other day, it depends from which direction the cat comes.

  • Meeting a chimney sweep – Arguably a little more likely a few decades ago, allegedly it is good luck to see a chimney sweep on your wedding day. Presumably you want to keep them a fair distance away from you, mind. You wouldn’t want to get the soot on your wedding dress!

Bad Omens

  • If it rains – In order to get a rainbow, there has to be a bit of rain, surely? Perhaps the two cancel each other out.

  • A pig, hare or lizard running across the road – Quite why it’s this trio of animals that are regarded as bad luck on your wedding day is anybody’s guess. If you don’t get married on a farm or in the desert then you should be okay!

  • Seeing an open grave – It’s fair to say if you see this on your wedding day, then it’s sure to make you a little bit upset. That being said, the same would be true if you saw an open grave on any day so we advise ignoring this one. Unless the church has been double booked!

  • Meeting a nun or a monk – This isn’t technically a bad omen unless you’re wanting children because apparently bumping into a nun or a monk on your wedding day foretells barrenness.

  • The groom dropping the wedding ring – Again, we aren’t sure if this is a bad omen or simply bad luck. Imagine dropping the wedding band in front of all those people on the biggest day of your life!

  • The bride tripping or falling over her front door – This is where the custom of the groom carrying the bride over the threshold comes from although what happens if the bride did trip or fall isn’t quite known. Again, if it happened, it’d be bad because somebody has just fallen over, which is never good.

 

Tips for hiring Wedding bands

Although many wedding bands may be able to learn a special song just for you, it’s often easiest to pick a first dance song which is already in their play list. Likewise, classical musicians may read sheet music but a well rehearsed tune for your ceremony is far more preferable to putting manuscript in front of them and making the best of it.

Many professional bands perform so regularly that they don’t rehearse more than once in a blue moon and, with the best will in the world, may not be able to book rehearsal space in what little free time they have to learn songs for all their clients.

Can the band physically play your song?

If you’re booking a jazz band to play at your wedding reception but want your first dance to be ‘Rock DJ’ by Robbie Williams, chances are the band is not going to be able to accommodate. Be aware of the instrumentation and style of the band you’re booking and realise what limitations this might have on what they can play.

Another good example of this would be a rock/pop party band being asked to perform a tune like ‘Fly me to the moon’ by Frank Sinatra. The popular Sinatra version of this song has an orchestra playing on it and whilst your party band may be able to busk the chords on guitar and piano, it won’t sound like the original.

Get your first dance song on CD

When planning your wedding dance, a good idea is to get your first dance song on CD and have either the DJ or band play the song through their equipment. This is a very popular choice as it’s the least hassle and allows the band to create an impact when they kick off their set immediately afterwards.

 

Stick with your budget

It’s not just the couples who are overspending when it comes to the wedding – it’s the guests, too! A massive three-quarters of the Brits surveyed would buy a new outfit if they were going to a wedding, and then there’s the wedding gift.

Around three quarters think it’s compulsory to buy a wedding gift if you are invited to a wedding, with half of Brits stating that between £26-£50 was an acceptable amount to spend on a wedding present. More than half of Londoners feel their wedding gifts ought to be repaid with a free bar.

Around 20% of couples have blown the wedding day budget, a new survey has revealed…

With the majority of couples overspending by between £2,000 and £5,000, some try to make amends – 7% of married Brits sold their wedding outfits after the big day to save money, and a third of those who didn’t, would consider it.

Whether it’s because they can’t afford the travel, the accommodation, the new dress and jacket combo they’ve had their eye on, a wedding gift, or paying for their own drinks, guests are being hit by wedding costs too. It’s no wonder that around a quarter would decline a wedding invitation because they couldn’t afford to go.

 

Wedding planning when pregnant

Life has an excellent little habit of throwing lots of stuff at you at once and getting married when you’re pregnant may be totally daunting. Often you don’t plan a wedding around a pregnancy and vice versa, however, it is possible to plan and have the best wedding ever when you’re a pregnant bride. Here’s how!

The dress

Some advice to all brides, pregnant or not, is to choose a wedding dress that makes you feel fabulous and is comfortable. Comfort is often treated as the second cousin, when it comes to wedding attire, which is a shame because a big factor in looking good is feeling good. If you’re looking for maternity dress inspiration, then there is a plethora of celebrity pregnant brides to check out, very few of which, hid the bump. Whatever dress you choose make sure you have a good chat to your seamstress about how alterable the outfit is as it can be hard to predict how your body is going to be changing.

Shoes

We go back to the comfort factor. If you want a pair of sassy heels, buy an additional pair of flats (there are so many stunning options out there) to wear when your legs and feet say no!

The ring

This is one that’s often forgotten but pregnancy can cause swelling in lots of different places, one in particular…your fingers! Be mindful of your wedding and engagement ring size. If you have a wedding ring fitted while you are pregnant, it may need resizing later on. Another option is to use a substitute ring on the day, get something cheaper (no one will ever know) and save the real ring for later when you finger return to ‘normal’.

The party

Pace yourself. It’s a big day… emotions are heightened, endorphins are flowing, make sure you look after yourself and listen to your body. If you need a rest. Have a rest. If you want to dance your behind off, then by all means, shake that booty!

Planning

Be strategic in your planning. Work in ways to sit when you can, schedule in little down time moments and use other people to help you. Yes, you are superwoman…we all are but you will be surrounded by many helper bees that want to assist you on the day and in the lead up to your wedding. Accept this help. Trust me on this. Drink lots of water, have snacks at the ready and make sure you have easy bathroom access!

To get out of something

  • Sometimes you might find yourself in a situation you don’t want to be in, whether that’s an uncomfortable conversation with a good friend asking if you fancy going to that book club she’s started or just a plain awkward conversation.

  • So know you have a great excuse to get out of anything, you are planning a wedding!!

To show off your ring whenever you want

  • Talking of wedding chat, showing off the ring is another conversation starter and will inevitably grab the attention of anyone around. That well-practiced hand flick of yours to make your ring dazzle and catch people’s eyes will never go to waste, even if you’ve spread the news of your engagement.

To blag some freebies

  • There are lots of bits and bobs involved with weddings, and people know that perfectly well. Because of this, walking around town talking about how you’re getting married may just get you a few freebies. People will want you to buy from them, and what better way to tempt a bride with the loving kindness of a freebie?

  • And then there’s the wedding gift list! Putting together a list of things you want so that people can buy them for you is the absolute dream. That fancy toaster you’ve been eyeing up every time you visit John Lewis? On the list! That activity on your honeymoon that would send you just a bit over budget? On the list!

  • But don’t think it’s all over for you when the wedding has been and gone. If you’ve got a honeymoon planned – whether it’s straight after the big day or a little bit later – it’s a good idea to let them know it’s your honeymoon that you’re celebrating, you lovebirds may just get some special treatment…

To drink in the morning

  • The morning of the big day: the time when the words ‘I’m getting married’ will probably be said again and again in a matter of minutes. It’s a big day and you’ll be feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement, and that glass or bottle of fizz staring at you from your fridge is the perfect way to calm you down. Even if the clock has only just hit 10am, it’s okay because you’re getting married!

Include Mum in the ceremony
