Not everybody wants a beach

Not everybody wants the ‘classic white sandy beach, azure blue swimming pool, hot sunshine, and cocktails at sunset’ type of a honeymoon. We take a look at some of those over-looked destinations that might not have a tropical climate but can still get you hot under the collar.

The lovely Lake District

How about a mini-moon walking in the Lake District, staying at some fantastic B&Bs and a lovely hotel. If you are fair skinned the sun can be a bit problematic so when you come back from the Lake District, you’ll be suntanned in a healthy way.

Super-fun skiing

Some people would much rather be skiing down a mountain than on a beach. Some couples find beach holidays boring. If you have ever only skied in Europe, why not go to the States to try out the snow there? Jackson Hole in Colorado is very recommended for all your skiers out there. If you’re both serious skiers and want a more action-orientated sort of honeymoon this maybe the honeymoon for you.

Ice cool Iceland

If you fancy going somewhere different and literally cool in every way, then consider a visit to Iceland. Just three hours from London, you can watch the Northern Lights, visit hot natural springs and soak in the geothermal pools, scuba dive and quad bike. There’s also a big nightclub scene in Reykjavik, if that’s your thing. It’s a great winter and summer destination and if you go during June, July and August you’ll enjoy 20 hours of straight daylight.

Going Japanese

Love sushi? Always wanted to visit Japan? Your honeymoon should be a holiday to remember and Japan offers an amazing once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience. It’s one of the top places to go skiing but if you go to the Hakuba Valley in the Japanese Alps you can also see the local snow monkeys keeping warm in the hot springs and dip into a hot tub yourself.

The skiing is amazing for both downhill skiers and snow boarders and you can choose from a luxury hotel to self-catering accommodation. There are plenty of English speakers to help you if your Japanese isn’t up to scratch and the village apparently has a great atmosphere. Get there on the bullet train from Tokyo (a lifetime experience in itself).

Captivating Quebec

If you fancy a city break somewhere a little more unusual then consider visiting Quebec City in French-speaking Canada. It has a beautiful walled old town with cobbled streets, lively cafes, bars and nightclubs, wonderful food and, for some bargain shopping, you’ll find the largest mall in eastern Canada just a 20-minute bus ride away.

You can enjoy ice-skating on the rinks in the city, visit galleries, attend a concert and the food with its French influence is completely delicious. Temperatures in the winter can go down to minus 10C but the days are dry, so you’ve very little chance of coming across any rain. Just wrap up well like the locals and enjoy the freshest of winter air.

Where should you stay? There are a number of hotels in various price ranges and we like the idea of the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, which has a private Jacuzzi with a stunning view over the city. Perfect for sharing a glass of Champagne and talking over the wedding! It might blow the budget but who cares? It’s your honeymoon!

Plan a Mini-moon

Mini-mooning is a growing trend among newlyweds and just 1.5 hours from London by train, the New Forest is fast becoming a top mini-moon destination and with its stunning landscape, range of activities and beautiful couples’ accommodation, it’s easy to see why. Here, we explore what makes the New Forest so special.

Honeymoons are the perfect remedy to the busy and exciting wedding day. They give couples the chance to getaway and recuperate together and enjoy a well-deserved break month, if not years, of planning and organisation.

While traditionally a couple was sent off on their honeymoon straight after the reception, and therefore had no chance to chat with their guests until two weeks later, today’s newlyweds are choosing to postpone the longer break, or to substitute it entirely in favour of a shorter mini-moon. The New Forest is a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and provides the ideal setting for a romantic break.

Amazing accommodation

Let’s face it, you don’t want your run of the mill hotel for your mini-moon. A once in a lifetime event, it deserves accommodation that wows, and there’s plenty of that in the New Forest.

If you’re looking for a place to get away from it all, Beaulieu River View is a gorgeously secluded bolthole for two. Stood on stilts above the Beaulieu River, it certainly has the wow factor and mini-mooners have been visiting for years, drawn by The Wind in the Willows reminiscent surroundings and the open plan living inside.

Grab a kayak from the local hire shop and take a trip down the river, enjoy walks in the local woodland or simply relax on the cabin’s wraparound balcony and watch the world go by.

For something equally special, couples can now stay on the famous Beaulieu Estate, home to Beaulieu Abbey, in the Old Telephone Exchange. Once the main exchange for the village of Buckler’s Hard and the Estate, today the Old Telephone Exchange is a delightfully renovated retreat for two, surrounded by enchanting landscape and local wildlife.

Or venture a little further inland to Jenny Wren’s, a holiday cottage just for two. Located in an authentic forest setting, with ponies, foals, donkeys and cattle making their daily foraging trips along the hedgerows, it’s the ideal escape to help you relax and rewind.

The New Forest is home to an abundance of stunning holiday cottages, offering something for every taste.

Fantastic activities

A mini-moon in the New Forest gives couples the chance enjoys a wide range of activities together. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a novice looking to try something new, there’s something to suit everyone.

Walking is a very popular pastime in the New Forest, thanks to the miles and miles of exquisite landscape, approved walking route and plenty of wildlife to spot en route. What could be more romantic than rambling through the woodland, chatting away and getting a bit of post-wedding cake exercise thrown in too?

Other outdoor pursuits such as cycling, horse-riding and water sports like kayaking are also popular and there are lots of activity centres offering rental of equipment and organised trips. Take a look at New Forest Activities for their range of days out and shorter trips, including foraging trails and kayaking.

Delicious food

Minimooners will be spoilt for choice when it comes to eating in the New Forest. From local markets selling fresh produce for you to cook yourself, through to local tea rooms and lots of AA rosette and Michelin star restaurants, you’re sure to find the perfect spot for a romantic meal (or two!).

Self-catering in the New Forest is really easy. Stray away from the supermarket and head to one of the food markets in the area. Setley’s Ridge is popular with locals for its food and also its wine selection which comes from its own vineyard, or try Tatchbury Manor Farm for homemade jams and a fantastic selection of meats.

Eating out is also a real pleasure and the New Forest is scattered with foodie gems. There are some lovely pubs which are fantastic as a respite for walkers and cyclists, or book a table to enjoy some locally sourced dishes in the warmth of traditional pub settings. The Royal Oak at Fritham comes highly recommended, as does The Oak Inn at Bank.

The Haven restaurant, set in the heart of Lymington Marina, is another excellent choice – more modern in style than the pubs and with views over the waterfront. If you’re for something extra special, try one of the many Michelin and AA rosette awarded restaurants, which can be found on the New Forest’s official visitor website.

The New Forest offers something to suit all tastes and is the perfect choice for minimooners seeking a romantic break, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Last Night of Freedom

Alternative hen party ideas that you’ll love

Hiring a ‘cheeky butler’

Having Butlers in the Buff at your hen party isn’t just about service with a cheeky smile. There is so much more that they can offer! Getting your butlers to join in with the hen party games is a fantastic way to get your hen party started. Here are five of our favourites – choose one to play on your last night of freedom!

The Wedding Dress Game

All you need is to split the group into two and have some white bin bags, tin foil, sellotape and some creative flair to create fabulous wedding dresses. The bride and the butler make great models. You could even ask your butler to judge the contest!

The Mr & Mrs Quiz

This game requires a little preparation. Ask the groom-to-be to answer a series of questions about the bride and then she has to guess the answers. The butler can read out the questions and dish out the forfeits if the bride gets them wrong.

Butler Olympics

Why not organise an old-fashioned sports day for the group, taking everyone back to their school days? Your butler could either take part or be referee and distribute equipment. Choose from your favourite sports day event or use our suggestions! Or why not challenge your butlers to a push-up contest?

Balloon Challenge

This popular activity keeps the party going! You will need one pack of party balloons (or condoms if you’re feeling risqué); small pieces of paper; a pen; and of course a Butler in the Buff to present the balloon and a pin for popping! Ask the group to write down a number of questions or forfeits on small pieces of paper that can be rolled up and placed inside a balloon before it’s blown up. At certain points during the festivities the Hen has to burst a balloon and answer the questions or follow the instructions. These could be wedding related questions, or choose from our list of hen night challenges.

Never Have I Ever…

This drinking game is for everyone so there’s nowhere to hide! All you need is a good selection of drinks for your butler to refill glasses with. Then ask your butler to read the questions out. For example, … “Never have I ever lied about my age” and then those people who have lied about their age take a drink.

Why not try one of these fun hen party games at your last night of freedom?

Cringe-worthy moments

While most aspects of planning a wedding are really fun and exciting, there are a few moments, which may leave you feeling uncomfortable. There are also aspects of the day that may make you feel a bit anxious.

Telling your friend, she’s not your bridesmaid

Having to tell one of your friends that she isn’t your bridesmaid is probably one of the biggest hurdles in the planning stage of the wedding. The best way to let her know that you still care about her is to tell her quietly and ask her to do something else at the wedding, for example make a speech.

Inviting work colleagues to the wedding

If you don’t want to invite everyone in the office to your wedding day, that’s absolutely fine! It’s your day, just invite your closest work friends and be discreet. Ask them to keep quiet about it too and if you decide to invite everyone, try not to leave one or two people out.

Inviting your mum or mother in-law to the hen do

Inviting your mum to your hen do can be a hard decision. If you feel like you won’t be able to let your hair down, relax and have fun then don’t invite her. An alternative can be to do something a bit more formal to celebrate with your mum rather than taking her out with your friends. It’s important to make sure she doesn’t feel left out though.

Messing up the first dance

Every bride fears messing up the first dance, whether that means stepping on the groom’s toes or falling to the floor. It is definitely something that should be practiced a few times, it doesn’t have to be choreographed but take some time with it. If you really can’t dance, then just simply sway with each other and invite everyone to join the dance floor as soon as possible.

Going to the ladies’ room in your dress

This may be something that’s overlooked when choosing your perfect wedding dress, but essential on the wedding night. This is one of the main reasons you should be really close with your bridesmaids, it’s essentially their job to help you with potential problems like this on the night.

Photo angles

It’s a given that on your wedding day there will be hundreds of photos taken of you and you may be worried about not looking good. Try not to worry too much about this, you’ve paid a wedding photographer to take photos of you and they’ll know what angles look the most flattering on you. You can always have a chat with the photographer to ask for the photo you’ve always been dreaming about for the mantelpiece though.

Deciding between lingerie or supportive underwear

This can be a tricky decision because you want to feel the best on your wedding day but wearing tummy-tucking underwear with a non-VPL will be really forgiving when you’re wearing your dress. It’s definitely something to keep in mind; you’ll always have the chance to change quickly after the wedding reception.

Dealing with family feuds

Most of the time, relatives will be civil with each other at a wedding even if they don’t get on with each other. They love you and are there for you on your big day, they won’t be focusing on each other. If you are worried however, then make sure they aren’t sat on the same table or sat near each other at the ceremony. The more distance that can be created between them, the better.

Valentine’s Wedding for 2017

February is the month of romance and passion. In February, many like to blow their salary on expensive tasting menus in top restaurants and embark on lavish weekends away in remote country spa hotels. For those who prefer to be more resourceful with their Valentine’s budget, it’s often a challenge to prove your love in another way.

Luckily, for those looking to escape this Valentine’s one recognises that whisking your partner away for a romantic weekend doesn’t need to be expensive. To help those looking to escape, they have come up with five ways to save money but still impress your other half next February.

Be realistic

Before deciding how to plan your wedding, what to do, where to go, where to stay, decide on how much you are willing to spend and work with it. By establishing this early on you will become more resourceful with the money you have and it will certainly go further.

Be original

A great way of proving to your partner that you love them is to think outside of the box. Why not choose a destination they wouldn’t think of going and surprise them? Even the most expensive cities in the UK have accommodation which is affordable but still offer a good spot to rest your head.

Be spontaneous

One of the best ways to be romantic is to be spontaneous. Tell your partner that you are taking them away; you can even tell them where you’re taking them if you’d prefer. The trick is to save all the little trips and adventures for them to find out the weekend goes on. This makes the trip more exciting and unpredictable.

Be tasteful

While being on a budget often rules out pricey experiences, one thing money can’t buy is taste. When choosing activities for your getaway pursue cultural experiences such as museums, art galleries, and landmark sites as oppose to gimmick activities that you can do at home like bowling, ice skating and laser quest. It is also worth taking advantage of upmarket restaurants and bars which offer cheaper menus between certain times of the day. To get ideas, TripAdvisor often have lists for popular destinations like ‘Things to Do in (a place which means something to you) etc.

Be true

Finally, like taste, no amount of money can buy true love. Ensure you spend plenty of time talking to one another, planning your next adventure and relaxing. Everything else will be an added bonus.

The perfect shape for your figure

The right wedding dress can do wonders for your figure. It can cinch you in at the waist, create the illusion of a flat tummy, hide big hips and much more – if you choose the right style for your body shape. Not sure what shape you are? Let us help you find your perfect style…

Apple – weight mainly around the middle

An ‘apple’ shaped bride has a body shape which tends to store the majority of the weight around the midriff – think Kate Winslet. Many people who are blessed with this sexy body shape aren’t too sure which is the best way to flaunt their assets but we can recommend the following designs;

A heavily pleated bodice which will help to hide and add additional shape to the torso and help to create a more defined waist. An A-line skirt which helps to keep the figure balanced and draw attention away from the waist.

Pear – weight mainly around the hips and thighs

Brides with a pear-shaped figure tend to have ‘more junk in the trunk’ and so carry more weight around their hips, bum and thighs. When balanced correctly a pear shape can look like a screen siren, take J-Lo for instance, a woman famous for her junk! For this shape we recommend;

A full skirt can hide and balance the figure by flaring out from the middle and highlighting a tiny waist. The sweetheart neckline helps to draw the eye to a defined décolletage and toned shoulders, typical of those lucky pear-shaped ladies. The beaded belt adds an element of bling for that J-Lo factor.

A fitted bodice helps to draw the eye upwards to the torso and the banded waist helps to define and exaggerate an enviable waist. The floral detailing across the bodice helps to add a feminine feel.

Hourglass – Fuller bust and hips, small waist

The hourglass figure can suit many styles of dress. The key to an hourglass figure is to accentuate the waist as this is your main asset. Many people believe the hourglass shape to be the perfect figure and this is embodied by Kelly Brook who is famous for her womanly curves. The following styles would be perfect for this heavenly body shape…

For example, a classic fishtail skirt and form fitting bodice. Hourglass stars such as Dita von Teese often favour this dress shape as it helps to show off a tiny waist but also highlight desirable assets, which an hourglass will possess. The sweetheart neckline will also help to define the bust whilst drawing the eye to a woman’s most treasured assets.

Another show stopping design for an hourglass would be a figure-hugging, pleated bodice with statement tulle, fishtail skirt. This exaggerated shape helps to balance out your faultless curves and the fitted bodice will help to highlight that defined waist.

Reverse Pear – Larger bust with smaller hips and legs

The key thing for a ‘reverse pear’ figure is to balance out the silhouette. Dresses with a fitted bodice and fuller skirt tend to work better as they help to even out the figure and create more of an hourglass shape. Celebrities such as Eva Mendes really rock this shape by following these simple rules.

A fitted bodice helps to define the waist and the lace shoulder straps help to keep the bust secure and the bride comfortable. The full skirt adds volume to smaller hips and balances out a heavy top.

Athletic – Slim all over

With an athletic build you need to create the illusion of curves as this body type is toned and sculpted to perfection. This build tends to look best in form-hugging dresses as they do not have the worry of looking top or bottom heavy. Celebrities such as Cameron Diaz can look amazing in practically any dress due to her enviable athletic shape…

A belted definition at the waist to help create the illusion of womanly curves. A cowl bust helps to emphasise a smaller chest and the beaded straps help to secure the dress and show off toned shoulders. A column skirt helps to keep the silhouette even and elegant.

Location location

Whether you plan on getting married in a church and transferring your guests to a separate reception venue, or plan on having the ceremony and evening party all in the same place, it’ll need to be a suitable location. When considering a location, most couples pick somewhere that is either near to where they currently live, or a place where either the bride or groom grew up. This is especially important to remember if you want a church wedding, because you will need to either still be living within the Parish or have a family connection to that church.

You should also keep in mind how long it takes to get to either venue (church or reception) because this might have an impact on your day. You should also consider if it’s a little off-the-beaten track, because you don’t want your guests getting in a flap and running late if they can’t find the place. Similarly, if your ceremony venue and evening venue are separate, will you be putting on transport to transfer guests? This will need to be budgeted for.

Finally, if the location is in the rural countryside, what are the options for guest accommodation? You need to know this in advance, because it’s courteous to include overnight options in with your invitations.

Savvy spending

Budget is a key factor for most couples when considering which venue to book. Before you put down any money for deposits, it’s worth chatting to the in-house co-ordinator to see if there are any deals or offers they can gift you for choosing to go with them. Sometimes they may give you the bridal suite and some complimentary rooms, or offers on welcome drinks and canapés. They might also be able to recommend suppliers that they regularly work with, who could offer discounts based on the repeat custom that the venue provides.

Also, try to visit the venue at least once if they’re hosting a fayre or wedding show, so you can see the venue all dressed up as it would be on your wedding day. Finally, if you can plan your entire wedding in under six months you might get a bargain on a last-minute package. Some venues drop their venues by as much as half the price, so if you’re a super organised bride it could be an ideal way to secure your dream venue at a fraction of the cost!

Whatever venue or theme you pick for your dream wedding, we can help you the whole way – from the moment you decide your venue, through to your bridal look for the actual day, and much, much more!

Some easy choices for your Wedding venue

Choosing your wedding venue will undoubtedly be one of the biggest decisions you’ll make as an engaged couple, so it’s good to start considering your options right away. If you’re not sure where to hold your wedding, we’ve got some top tips to help you decide…

The venue you pick will determine the amount of guests you can invite, the location of your Wedding and, of course, the theme and styling, too. You need to allocate a good proportion of your wedding planning time and budget to finding your dream venue because there are so many different options to consider and look at. From manor houses to stand-alone tipis, there really is something out there to suit every kind of couple, it’s just a matter of making your own decision.

Your day, your way

First and foremost, decide on the type of wedding you want. Next, set a budget with careful consideration as to how much you can afford for your dream wedding venue. You should also discuss with your partner whether exclusivity is important to you – if it is, this might make it costlier.

Have you dreamed about this day your whole life, and can’t imagine getting married without everyone you know to watch it? If so, then start looking at country house wedding venues with large capacities. If you’d prefer a wedding more intimate and low-key, just surrounded by close friends and family, then perhaps a garden marquee is more your thing? Once you know what best suits you as a couple, you can then start writing your guest list and begin searching for places to suit your requirements.

When to book

It’s perfectly normal for couples to book their chosen wedding venue 12-18 months before their wedding date, giving them plenty of time to plan their perfect day. The big popular wedding venues up and down the country get booked up a long time in advance during the peak, summer wedding venue, so we advise that you book as soon as you’ve found ‘the one’.

That said, if you are planning a wedding in just a few months, there’s plenty of last-minute bargains to be had! If you’re planning a wedding in just a few months, you might get lucky and be able to book a date at the last minute due to a cancellation or last-minute availability. Once your wedding date is secured and you’ve paid the deposit you can then move on to considering how you’ll style it.

Pick a theme

The theme of your wedding will be directly influenced by the wedding venue you’ve chosen. For example – you’re not going to have a rustic, country-garden style interior if your venue is by the seaside. Think of your wedding and venue as part of the bigger picture, and go with a venue that’s in-keeping with the theme that you want.

For glamorous, glittering modern big days, we recommend boutique hotels. If it’s a country, rustic, cider-filled wedding you’re dreaming of, then we suggest you check out your nearest barn venues. Whereas if you fancy yourself as a bit of an Elizabeth Bennett marrying her Mr Darcy then a country house will be more your thing. And if you want a little bit of everything we’ve just mentioned, pop a marquee up in the grounds of a country house, and you’ve got a little bit of them all!

Be bold at your Wedding

Weddings don’t have to be a formal affair. Add some personality to your big day with these fun and quirky wedding ideas.

Bright and bold

There’s no better way to show off your fun side than with colours. Bright, bold and in your face is what you should be going for when you’re thinking of colourful and quirky wedding ideas.

Think ravishing reds, grassy greens and passionate pinks. Not only will they stand out, they will look amazing in your photographs.

Nature’s gift

Think outside of the box when it comes to your floral decorations. Instead of red and white roses and carnations, think pink and orange sweet-peas or tulips. Trust us, they will look amazing!

Don’t forget to take a trip down to your local garden centre and pick up some lavender seeds to scatter in the doorway. When your guests walk into your venue they will take the scent of lavender in with them.

Terrific transportation

Nothing says quirky like a brightly coloured VW camper van. Leave your venue in style in your very own mobile home, all packed and ready for your next adventure as husband and wife.

Even if camper vans aren’t your thing, you’ll need to rock up to your reception in a cool vintage car. How about a pink 1950’s Cadillac that really will wow your guests.

Time for cake

Ditch the classic 3-tier wedding cake in favour of some more quirky wedding ideas. Cake pops are a great alternative to a traditional wedding cake.

Choose round and colourful cake pops or get them designed to look just like you, the choice is yours!

Finally get some friends, learn a dance routine and surprise your partner and above all have fun!!!!
